Description: The University of Montana’s annual Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival is a celebration of jazz performance and education. Buddy DeFranco, a part-time resident of Whitefish, is widely regarded as ‘the supreme virtuoso of (the clarinet) and an innovator who defies category and time’. (Ted Panken, Downbeat Magazine).In addition to Buddy DeFranco, this year’s festival features renowned clarinetist Eddie Daniels and accomplished trumpeter Byron Stripling. Eddie Daniels is clearly a renaissance musician, a virtuoso in both jazz and classical music, recipient of unreserved accolades from his peers, from critics, and from the public. In Eddie’s hands, the music of Mozart can be as engaging as that of Charlie Parker and a concert featuring both can be a uniquely rewarding experience for the audience. As a player he seeks to tear down the walls that seem to separate jazz and classical music.Trumpeter Byron Stripling is one of the hottest artists in jazz today. His versatility and charm as both an actor and musician has won him roles on TV and Broadway as well as with such groups as the Count Basie Orchestra and the Lincoln Center Classical Jazz Orchestra. Millions have heard his solo trumpet playing on TV during the Grammy Awards Show as well as in TV theme songs and favorite movie scores.Buddy DeFranco lends his name and presence to a festival that, for over 20 years, has given high school and college jazz ensembles the chance to learn from and enjoy performances by top-notch jazz musicians and educators. With an agenda that includes daytime adjudication and clinics for the high school ensembles, the festival features a different performing artist on each of its two evening concerts.
