Lewis and Clark Trail Ranger Report:
The Rock Creek Mercantile is a great little fly shop on fantastic Rock Creek, a Blue Ribbon Trout stream that boasts over 1600 trout per-mile. That says a lot about the kind of fishing one might expect to have there. Rock Creek is probably the best river in the state of Montana for those seeking a grand slam: a cutthroat trout, a brook trout, a rainbow trout, a brown trout and a bull trout all in the same day. Bighorn sheep are hard to miss on any day of fishing Rock Creek and moose sightings are commonplace.
Douglass Persico, the owner of the Rock Creek Mercantile, is a great and helpful guy. When I was there as an undercover trail agent I mentioned that I was thinking about buying a new fly rod and he insisted that I cast every fly rod in the shop (there were lots of them) that might have filled my needs. He explained the differences in the rods to me and had genuine interest in me getting the right rod. Service like that is not always seen at a fly shop and Doug’s passion and knowledge are evident when he deals with customers. Subsequently I have become an occasional customer of the Mercantile, or Merc, as the locals call it. Doug always finds the time to show a customer how to tie a San Juan worm or answer questions for beginners and old timers alike. He always has the flies that are working on the creek.
The Merc is brimming with gear, all kinds of great stuff for fly-fishing and fly tying. There are plenty of rods, waders, reels and other things to outfit you for whatever kind of fishing you might encounter, though primarily Montana trout fishing. Doug himself ties a lot of the flies for the shop, many are Rock Creek specific patterns that have been developed over the years. It’s nice to buy quality flies that are tied locally. The Merc lacks the pretentiousness that you sometimes find in a fly shop and caters to fly-fishermen of all skill levels and budgets. There’s a great selection of quality rods that won’t break the bank as well as some that might.
The motel rooms that are available are clean, comfortable and positioned perfectly as a base of operations for fishing Rock Creek, the Clark Fork or any of the other rivers in the area. The Merc isn’t that far off the highway, making it a great place to stop for a night before heading back on the trail.
The Rock Creek Fisherman’s Mercantile and on Line Fly Shop does it all. You can stay there, get outfitted with all the finest fly-fishing gear there, and even buy some picnic food there. We at L&C200 and BigSkyFly bestow upon The Rock Creek Mercantile our highest rating for a fly shop: Ten Golden Trout (out of a possible ten)
