Description: In 1989, the first running of the Elkhorn Mountain Endurance Runs took place on the Elkhorn Mountain trails just south of Montana City, Montana. The original race included a 100K (62.2 mile) trail race through the Elkhorn Mountains and in 1997, the race was expanded to include a 50K (31mile) run.The Elkhorn Mountain Endurance Run 100K is ranked in the Ultrarunning Magazine as one of the toughest 100K trail races in the United States as well as being one of the largest. The race attracts numerous elite distance runners from all over the United States and Canada. The race has also seen participants from as far away as Australia and England. The course consists of approximately 39 miles of trail and 23 miles of country roads. There are 11 well stocked aid stations on the 100K course and the farthest a runner will run without a aid station is nine miles.These races are also conducted to benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children. In 2001 the race and race participants raised over $3,000 for the Shrine Hospitals. Since the races were started in 1988, over $53,000 has been raised for this worthy cause.In 1997, a series of Running Camps were added to the Elkhorn Mountain Endurance Run activities, and in 2000, week long Fitness Retreats were offered.
