Description: Battle flags, mini-skirts, airplanes and George Washington's hair…surprises lurk around every corner at the State Historical Building! The newest exhibit, "Honor the Colors," pays tribute to Iowa's military history and includes Civil War battle flags, equipment and more. The museum also houses the infamous tongue-in-cheek exhibit, "Never Put Things Into Your Mouth." Experience history through sight, sound and touch. Educational programming features games, tours and other opportunities for families. Special events for kids, always free, include Friday Fest in the summer, spring break activities, parties and Cabin Fever Getaway at winter holiday time. Visit the Museum Store for unique gifts and books, and enjoy lunch or a snack in the café with a spectacular view of the Capitol and downtown Des Moines. Hours: Open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday; noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday (museum only). Open Mondays during the summer. Free admission.
