Description: A trip to Fort Union takes you back in time to the mid-19th century, the heyday for Fort Union and the fur trade on the Upper Missouri river. Tour the partially reconstructed fort and walk where many famous folk from several countries and cultures walked, folk such as Kenneth McKenzie, Alexander & Natawista Culbertson, Father Pierre DeSmet, Sitting Bull, Karl Bodmer, and Jim Bridger. Fort Union hosts or promotes four special events each year; Rendezvous, Indian Arts Showcase, Labor Day Living History Weekend, and Fort Buford Military Encampment (see Fort Union's website for details). Fort Union Trading Post NHS has several collections of archaeological and research materials. Research materials consist of a park library, original documents, research files, and microfilm. Fort Union's library is one of the most extensive libraries on fur trade history and Northern Plains tribal cultures. Fort Union's archaeological collection is also one of the largest archaeological collections in the National Park System. A series of archaeological digs took place at Fort Union Trading Post NHS between 1966 and 1988, with the most extensive work being done in the mid- to late-1980s.
