Description:
Missouri Historical Society

Founded in 1866, the Missouri Historical Society provides its diverse community with information about past human thought and activity, supplying critical context for analysis of persistent themes and significant issues in the present. To accomplish this mission, the Missouri Historical Society collects, preserves and interprets objects and materials pertinent to an understanding of the history of the region, based on an ongoing program of systematic historical research.

Home of the 1st leg of the National Lewis and Clark Exhibition Tour! January 22-September 6 2004
One of St. Louis’ most outstanding Classical Revival structures, the Jefferson Memorial Building was dedicated in 1913 as the first national monument to Thomas Jefferson. Designed by Isaac Taylor (the architect of the 1904 World’s Fair), the Memorial is a marvelous example of the splendor of public architecture in the early 20th century, with its terrazzo flooring, marble wainscoting, bronze doors and framing, decorative plasterwork and Tiffany light fixtures. The Memorial’s renovation yields 8,400 square feet of museum-quality exhibiton galleries including the:

Lopata World's Commemorative Center- Highlighting the lore and legacies of the 1904 World’s fair.

Jefferson Gallery- Can You Tell Me How To Get Sesame Street?

Community Partners Gallery- A rotating roster of exhibitions telling stories of St. Louis-area neighborhoods, organizations and other community partner institutions, assembled by groups with the expertise and assistance of MHS.

Piper Gallery- Features Many Voices: Reflecting on American Indian Objects, the first exhibition in 70 years to showcase MHS’ extensive Native American collection.

The Emerson Center, a major addition to the south of the Jefferson Memorial Building provides 92,000 square feet of state-of-the-art museum space for exhibits, public education programs, events and visitor services. Designed by Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc., the Emerson Center is a sensitive complement to the Memorial and, with its southern facade of curving glass, an extraordinarily beautiful addition to the Forest Park landscape.

Upon entering the Emerson Center, stop at the Information Desk and pick up our bimonthly Calendar of Events, an array of brochures detailing our exhibitions and specialized fliers giving in-depth information about upcoming programs and exhibits. Have questions? Ask our friendly Visitor Services representatives stationed at the Information Desk for help. You can also sign up to become an MHS Member or Volunteer. While in the Emerson Center foyer, take a look at the fabulous etched glass monument of the Homer G. Phillips Hospital.

Highlights of the Emerson Center include:

Seeking St. Louis Galleries- Totaling 18,000 square feet, this permanent exhibition chronicles the building of this community through the stories and historic materials of countless St. Louisans, from laborers to presidents.

Special Exhibitions Gallery- 6,000 square feet to accommodate the largest MHS and traveling exhibitions.

Education Center- Four flexible classroom/learning centers, a 346-seat traditional auditorium and an educational resource center support diverse education and events programming for the schools, community groups and the public.

Louisiana Purchase Gift Shop- Offering diverse goods showcasing regional history and culture, including specialty items designed to complement the exhibits and the area's most comprehensive selection of regional history books.

Meriwether's Restaurant - Enjoy innovative and popular cuisine in a setting offering unparalleled views of Forest Park.

In 2004, two hundred years after Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out from St. Louis on their
transcontinental journey of exploration, a major exhibition mounted by the Missouri Historical Society will focus on their voyage. The 6,000 square foot exhibition will be a reunion of artifacts and documents that have not been seen in one place since 1806. Like the expedition it celebrates, the exhibition will tour the United States from coast to coast in three years, 2004-2006. Visitors to the exhibition will step into the worlds the explorers saw, and cross the natural and cultural landscapes they also traversed. With Lewis and Clark as guides, we will be able to imagine an America that history rarely shows.
