While you’ll be quite comfortable as the Hargrave’s guests with down comforters on your bed and a cat curled up on the antique rocker, you’ll not be visiting a dude ranch. Hargrave’s is a working cattle ranch in the tall timber country of the northwestern Montana Rocky Mountains. You’ll become part of small group of special people who learn what their way of living offers to harried lives. A ranch guest list of 19 means individualized attention, whether at the horse barn, campfire, or dinner table. All year round people join the ranch crew and play or work as to their individual fantasies.Spring calving in March-April has guests out in the calving pastures helping the cowboys ear tag, doctor, and move to fresh pasture the newly birthed calves. Joining the 2am herd check can mean seeing the Northern Lights in all their splendor. May’s spring days bring green grass, fence building, and neighborhood branding parties. Early June is our ‘turn out’ days when cattle are pushed to their summer ranges. These are true cow punchin’, long saddle days.Summer means checking and moving the cattle to new pastures on horseback, but we start allowing a whole lot of time for plain ol' fun. Like rides to the ridge tops, overnight camp outs, outdoor dinners, and simple star gazing on the front porch. There’s five lakes within five miles to settle in on with the canoe or rod and reel. Or cool off in crystal waters after a day in the saddle. Try your fly rod in the two miles of the Thompson River that runs through the ranch or explore the rest of the 40 miles of pools. We’ll line up river floating fly fishing on a nearby blue ribbon stream or tingling white water rafting for all ages.Rainy day? Great opportunity to see Kalispell’s western stores, cowboy outfitters, galleries, custom jewelry, authentic Blackfeet art work or the bronze foundry.Autumn sees guests joining us to herd the bunches of cattle down to the home valley. Fall colors, crisp air and frisky cattle make for beautiful adventurous days of riding.Winter time on the ranch is a wonderful time to snuggle in with a good novel, cross country ski right out from the ranch or go out and help feed the cattle and horses.You are welcome to do or try as much as you like here.
