The couple moved to Oregon originally because of Elizabeth's transfer in her job as a mechanical engineer with Texas Instruments. Jeff returned to school to college to prepare for EcoTours after years of managing backpack/outdoor stores. Portland Oregon fulfilled the requirement of nearby wilderness and progressive people. Travel has been a constant pursuit throughout the Davies' lives. Elizabeth's parents are from Europe, so spending summers traveling through Europe in their early twenties was a natural. Shortly after moving to Portland they set a goal to save and travel around the world. In January 1990 Jeff and Elizabeth started a marathon 20-month trip around the world which provided many of the ideas needed to form their business, EcoTours of Oregon. Their self-guided trip took them to South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. More recently time was also spent in Mexico, the Caribbean, Nepal and Thailand. In late 1991, the Davies investigated local needs and entrepreneurial opportunities, matching their findings to their own environmental consciousness and lifestyle with a venture which filled a void in the tourism industry locally--forming EcoTours of Oregon. EcoTours of Oregon leads day tours from Northwest Oregon to many of this areas greatest attractions. Much of the preparation in forming EcoTours came naturally for the Davies. According to Elizabeth, "We have visited many of the worlds natural and undeveloped places. These experiences have given us insight to ecological concerns and helped us to develop new ways to travel that result in terrific visitor experiences, minimum impacts on the area and maximum benefit to local economies. That's what ecotourism is all about." Jeff adds, "Of course, our long time interest in Western wilderness creates an ability to do the tours from the heart."
