Several soldiers, who served for Sterling Price, were given a choice by the Union troops who captured them. The choices were to go home, surrender, or go to the Montana Territory and be released. Most soldiers went west. As they traveled they heard the news of the discoveries of gold in Last Chance Gulch. The men set out to reach Last Chance, and found their own discovery at Confederate Gulch. Confederate Gulch and its tributaries produced $12,000,000.The summer of 1864 was sensational in the vicinity all around Last Chance Gulch. Montana Bar here yielded as much as a thousand dollars a pan, and $115,000 worth of gold in one week.
