The Nez Perce called it the Place Of Shadows, a name far more understanding of the land's capacity to hold darkness and light. Early inhabitants hunted, gathered, found shelter from winter and marked rocks with their sign. Pictographs, petroglyphs, pit houses and burial mounds fill the canyon with watchful spirits.
