Description: First floor exhibits highlight Native American artifacts from all over North America. Most of the artifacts were collected by a local man who acquired more than 3,000 objects prior to 1923. The extensive collection ranges from utilitarian objects like awls and ulus to remarkable examples of masks, handwoven baskets, and beautifully beaded clothing.
The story of St. Joseph’s rich history is told on second floor. A sample archaeological dig and a diorama of a Northwest Missouri prairie as it would have appeared around the 1700s begin the story. French fur traders and trappers were the first to explore the area, and St. Joseph had its beginning as the Robidoux fur trade post at the Blacksnake Hills on the Missouri River in 1827. Exhibits depicting this period include a diorama of the interior of Robidoux’s post. Case displays also highlight the Native Americans living in Northwest Missouri as settlement began.
Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery passed this area on July 7, 1804, and again in September 1806 on the return trip. The St. Joseph Museum features exhibits on the exploration, and the museum has received certification as a site on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. One of the exhibits incorporates a window overlooking the Missouri River and St. Michael’s Prairie, an early landmark noted in Captain Clark's journals. Recently, the model for the statue that is located in Case Park in Kansas City, Missouri, was donated to the museum by Commerce Bank of St. Joseph. An exhibit has been built around this statue.
Although there are different animals displayed on each of the floors in the museum, Third Floor is known as the Natural History floor. Many of the stuffed animals are depicted in their natural habitats. Most of the animals are from Missouri, but we have specimens from other parts of the United States as well.
