On-A-Slant Village Website parkrec@state.nd.us NORTH DAKOTA LEWIS AND CLARK Description: On-A-Slant Village is the most famous Mandan Indian Village. Before the arrival of Lewis and Clark, there were approximately fifteen thousand members of the Mandan nation - encompassing nine to twelve fortified cities. Sadly, by the time Lewis and Clark did arrive to the Mandan village, most of the On-A-Slant village was wiped out by the small pox epidemic. On-A-Slant Indian Village had a population of about 1,000 people. These people lived in earth lodges-4 have been reconstructed (see picture below). Today this village is located inside the Fort Abraham State Park.
