The Museum displays over 1300 specimens including exhibits specifically devoted to Butte and Montana minerals and the area’s mining history. Of particular interest is the Highland Centennial Gold Nugget. Found in 1989 in the Highland Mountains south of Butte, it weighs in at 27.5 troy ounces and is believed to be one of the largest found this century. Another large specimen is the 400 lb smokey quartz crystal found in 1996 near Toll Mountain. A special darkroom is devoted to a spectacular display of fluorescent minerals. The Earthquake Studies Laboratory is situated in the Museum with operating seismographs for visitors to see."
