Description: McGinnis Meadows Cattle & Guest Ranch is an authentic working cattle ranch located in northwest Montana. Our main emphasis is our horse and cattle program. We ride and teach our horses using the Buck Brannaman style of horsemanship. This method, based on the 300 year old Vaquero tradition, is both gentle and effective and creates a unique bond between horse and rider. Guests of all levels, from beginner to experienced, can learn as much as they like about horsemanship and further their riding skills. Once everyone is comfortable with their horse, we put everything we’ve learned to use by working cattle. You will leave here a better rider. Here is our schedule: April: Learn from the ground up about starting horses, ride our summer range to learn the country and check fences, finding shed antlers is also a treat. May: Work your horse team penning, tracking, cutting, even roping steers (from the ground of course). June through the end of October, experience moving cattle to new pastures on some spectacular country surrounding a National Wildlife refuge. We have time off November and December and our winter season starts January 2. Work on horsemanship in our heated indoor arena in the mornings and cross country ski in the afternoons, if you wish. Tour the country in our snow cat and enjoy the hot tub each evening. We are small, only 15 guests per week, so we are really able to give individual attention, and tailor each day to you. Each day during our main season, you can choose to ride and move cattle, practice team penning and cutting steers, further your horsemanship skills in our arenas or out in the meadows, or just head out and explore new country. No head to tail rides out here! Just relaxing on the deck with a good book is always an option too. For non-riders, we have mountain bikes to explore the old logging roads, fishing gear and inner tubes for relaxing on a crystal clear lake (swimming is more for July and August). The Cabinet Wilderness Area is nearby for some excellent hiking as well. We are always teaching a new horse and it is exciting to just watch and learn as well.Each evening after a full day, we come home to a hearty dinner and fine cozy lodging.
