A new visitor center is planned to open in 2003 at Hells Gate that will tell the story of Lewis and Clark and their interaction with the natural environment of northern Idaho. Hells Gate State Park contains some of the most spectacular scenery in Idaho. Noted as one of the deepest gorges in North America, the park scenery often overshadows the equally fascinating history of the area. Old homesteads, long-forgotten prospector cabins, and Native American petroglyphs offer a fascinating human story. To best experience the area, spend a night camping.
