BigSkyMontana.us BigSkyMontana.us Description: The Headwaters Heritage Museum of Three Forks is one of those gems a tourist sometimes finds off the well-traveled highway.The museum contains thousands of artifacts depicting our local history, such as a small anvil, all that remains of a trading post established here in 1810. The largest brown trout ever caught in the state of Montana is also on display. Audio and videotapes are available that describe the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the life of Sacajawea. Nostalgic scenes from the past include a dental office, kitchen, laundry nook, school room, blacksmith shop, and millinery shop. Three Forks was once a thriving railroad community, and the Milwaukee Railroad station agent’s office holds an interesting assortment of memorabilia of those bygone days. The military room holds mementoes of the men and women of Three Forks who served their country during times of war. Another exhibit is 701 different types of barbed wire.A short drive from Three Forks is the Headwaters State Park where you can enjoy the same view Lewis and Clark did in 1805 when they first gazed on the confluence of the three rivers - the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin, which form the Missouri River. Other nearby attractions are the Lewis and Clark Caverns, just 16 miles west of Three Forks, and the Madison Valley Buffalo Jump, 14 miles south, near Logan."
