SIOUX CITY PUBLIC MUSEUM
COLLECTIONS & EXHIBITS

The Sioux City Public Museum has one of the largest and most complete collections of Indian artifacts, articles of clothing, and ritual in the Siouxland area. Many choice selections consider the early use of quillwork and the later use of beads for ornamentation are on exhibition. Special emphasis is placed on the Plains and Woodland tribes of the tri-state area.

This area's early history plays an important role at the Sioux City Public Museum. The Pioneer Hall portrays life on the frontier, highlighted by a log cabin.

Special significance is placed on the development of Sioux City from a pioneer village, plotted by Dr. John Cook in 1854 and incorporated in 1857, to a substantial city. The community's maturation followed the established pattern of growth on the urban frontier.

Life science exhibits depict the relationship of the ecology of the area region and local wildlife. Mounted specimens are used to teach the interdependence of nature and animal life.

The Museum has stressed two fields of earth science, mineralogy and paleontology. Exhibits in mineralogy explain the various properties and characteristics of minerals, as well as their chemical composition and possible commercial uses.

In the Paleontology Hall, the geologic eras and the formation of fossils are demonstrated by many specimens of very early plant and animal forms of life.
