Description: From the discoveries of gold around 1860, until the coming of railroads around 1890, the "mountain steamboats" were the main sources of shipping into and out of Montana and the inland Northwest, hauling an estimated 180,000 tons of freight as well as thousands of passengers. About 200 different steamers were recorded on the Missouri, many making several trips. The mountain steamboats were witness to and a major part of an exciting chapter in the coming of white civilization to Montana. It was an exciting and historic time, one that I hope my paintings may help to preserve. .E. (Jim) Trott paints the scenery of the historic Upper Missouri River region of central Montana. He paints the sweeping prairies, the ever-changing mountains, the homestead buildings of the pioneers, and the Missouri River, with its panoramas that amazed Lewis and Clark. His latest work features the "mountain steamboats" that once came to port at Fort Benton, braving the many hazards of a capricious river. Jim possesses a degree in Fine Arts from Harvard University and has worked as an artist for the Field Museum in Chicago. His home and studio are in Fort Benton, Montana
