Description: Washington state's Maryhill State Park is located across from The Dalles and the Columbia River. It provides a great camping location for Bicentennial patrons. Maryhill SP offers 4,700 feet of waterfront with close proximity to various natural and cultural attractions.
Other landmarks near Maryhill State Park include the Maryhill Museum of Art,and a replica of Britain’s Stonehenge. The somewhat eccentric railroad magnate Sam Hill built both. He wanted Stonehenge to serve as a monument to peace. Maryhill Museum, meanwhile, is sometimes called the nation’s most isolated art museum. Its priceless collection includes many Rodin sculptures, Indian artifacts, Russian icons, antique chess sets, and personal possessions donated by Queen Marie of Romania, all showcased in a lovely, lonely building overlooking the Gorge. On the east side of the grounds, a Lewis and Clark Overlook gives visitors a sweeping view of the Columbia River and several landmarks—including Miller Island and the Deschutes River—mentioned in the expedition journals. The museum also has a café, one of relatively few places to eat along this stretch of WA 14. Maryhill Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15 through November 15, though a major renovations project may delay reopening in spring 2001, so call ahead to (509) 773-3733 for an update. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $1.50 for children ages 6 to 12.
