Description: Featured on a beautiful ranch property east of Salmon, Idaho, the Center contains 71 acres of pasturelands between Highway 28 and the Lemhi River. With the backdrop of the riparian forests, the Beaverhead Mountain Range (including the Sacajawea Peaks), and view of the route used by the expedition, the site offers a true natural experience of the land over 200 years ago. The goal of the Center is to present history and Culture in this natural setting.
Based on the Expedition Journals and the Lemhi Shoshone people, the Center will tell about Sacajawea, her people the Agai Dika, and the events of the expedition through the Salmon River country through exhibits and living history programs. With easy access off of Highway 28, visitors will park and walk through the Sacajawea Gateway Grove featuring trees encountered during the expedition and used by the Agia Dika.
Natural pathways will guide the visitors to the new Center and to a scenic overlook where you will be introduced to Sacajawea, Agai Dika culture, and the events of the expedition in the Salmon River country. You will be introduced to the one mile outdoor interpretive trail, geographical features, and other recreational and educational programs at the Center. A small gift shop, bookstore, and outdoor group talk area is included in the Center.
A natural amphitheater bowl with a seating capacity for over 500 people, and a research library are also located at the Center.
