Description:
The Drewyers River Heritage Marker, located in the park, tells the story of the present Palouse River. Originally, the river was named Drewyers River by Lewis and Clark in honor of George Drouillard (Drewyer), a civilian member of the expedition.
The rich geologic history of this 1,282-acre park is readily evidenced by basaltic formations that outline the paths of both the Snake and the Palouse rivers. Park visitors drive through rolling hills of agricultural land, broken lava, dry grass and sagebrush for opportunities to wander through what geologists call "the strangest landscape this side of Mars." These "Channeled Scablands" are part of hundreds of square miles of raw, peeled ground that stretch from Spokane west to the Cascades and south to the Snake River.
A collaboration of history and spectacular scenery. This 1,282-acre park offers visitors extensive camping,boating, picnicking, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Also, a 198-foot waterfall cascades into the Palouse River.
This is also the archeological home of the oldest human remains ever found in the Western Hemisphere - known as "Marmes Man".

From Starbuck:
Drive Hwy. 261 about eight miles northwest or 14.2 miles southeast of Hwy. 261 and Hwy. 260. Lyons Ferry is 17 miles southeast of Washtucna off SR 261.
From Dayton:
Travel east on Hwy 12 for approx. 15 miles to Hwy. 261. Turn left (north) onto Hwy. 261and proceed 15 miles. Turn right in the park.
From Washtuca:
Proceed southwest on Hwy 261 for approx. six miles. Turn left (southeast) and continue on Hwy. 261 and drive approx. 15 miles. Turn left into the park. |
