Buy Patrick Clark posters online. Description: Placer gold had been found in the 1860’s. Emigrant Gulch Mining District is the oldest in Park County. In 1863 Thomas B. Curry and two of his friends discovered placers. They were the first to visit the area besides the Crow Indians who claimed all the land east of the Yellowstone River their own. The Crow raided their camp, took all their food and supplies, and ordered them to get off of their land. The men went back to Virginia City, and returned the next spring with 30 more men. A telegraph was set up linking Virginia City and Emigrant Gulch. Word spread, and more men came to dig. They had little luck finding gold, however. In 1866 Davis B. Weaver and a party of prospectors discovered placer gold in the creek bed. The load was thought to be extremely rich, and assayed $5,000 to the ton . It lay near Emigrant Creek near the mountains. Winter set on, and the Indians continuously ambushed the men so the strike was abandoned before any mining was done. A couple of men from the party returned two years later in search of the load. For several months the men looked, however, everything looked different and the search was worthless. "
