It is the county seat of Lemhi County. The 4000 foot elevation and annual rainfall of 8.8 inches give Salmon four distinct seasons that have a temperature ranges from below zero in the winter months to an occasional 95-100 degrees in the summer. A 30-bed hospital, ambulance service, EMT and Search & Rescue units and a volunteer fire department support the community. Recreational opportunities abound all year. The local ice rink and nearby skiing area - as well as cross country skiing and snowmobile trails are available in the winter. Summer activities include white water rafting and kayaking, 4-H and rodeo activities, hiking and sight-seeing. Fishing and hunting are also very popular pastimes in this area. Known as the Whitewater Capitol of the World, Salmon, Idaho is the gateway to some of the last wild river systems in America. The two and a quarter million acre River of No Return Wilderness provides unequaled opportunities to see the splendor of an America untouched since Indians were alone in these lands. Bighorn sheep, mountain goats, rainbow trout and chinook salmon, elk, deer and mountain lion all make their homes in the surrounding hills. We are an important point on the Lewis and Clark Trail and the birthplace of Sacajawea.
