Description:
Around October 19, 1805, the Lewis & Clark Expedition passed through this area. William Clark noted the unique shape of this rock and dubbed it 'Hat Rock'.

The Hat Rock State Park entrance is just west of the junction of US 730 and Oregon 37. The road that leads east at the Hat Rock State Park entrance sign winds up in a private subdivision; instead, take the road to the left, which leads to an absolutely gorgeous little day-use park area with big shade trees, picnic tables, and a pond filled with ducks and geese eager for handouts.

The Lewis and Clark historical marker is located at the upper parking lot. It notes the captains passed and named this point on October 19, 1805. Clark climbed to the top of the landmark and said that, from its summit, a snow-covered mountain could be seen to the northwest. He first thought it was Mount Saint Helens, but it was really Mount Adams, Washington’s second-highest peak at 12,307 feet. Homeward bound, the expedition passed Hat Rock again on April 27, 1806.

There is no camping in the park itself, but a private campground is located just outside the site boundaries. Other activities include swimming and boating. Climbing Hat Rock is no longer permitted.

The fishing has also been highly regarded: A boat ramp provides access to the lake and the fishing opportunities: walleye, sturgeon and other fish.

There is no fee to use this park.
