Buy Patrick Clark posters online. Description: Hassel was originally known as Saint Louis. As early as 1866 placer gold was discovered on Indian Creek, near Hassel. During its active mining years the creek grossed about $5,000,000 in gold. Placer mining ended about 1880, however stamp mill and some dredging operations continued. A new wave of mining swept over the camp in the mid-1890’s, reviving the camp. Sometime during the 1890’s the St. Louis name was dropped for Hassel in respects to a pioneer miner, Joseph E. Hassel.Hassell was famous for its huge Diamond Hill Stamp Mill, which operated at full capacity in 1898.The mine is now gone, all that is left are the canyon walls."
