Description:
COURTESY OF NEBRASKA STATE PARKS...
History is abound here at Fort Atkinson State Historic Park!

The explorers first set up camp in the area on July 30, 1804, and held council with the Oto and Missouri Indians on August 3, 1804. That powwow gave the locale its name of "Council Bluff," and Clark later recommended the site for the location of a fort. There, Fort Atkinson was built ... on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri.

Fort Atkinson is located just east of the town of Fort Calhoun, a few miles north of Omaha along US 75. Archaeological crews from the Nebraska Historical Society conducted digs at the site during the 1950s, hoping to establish the location of the fort’s walls, gates, and outbuildings. All records at the fort indicated it was the site of the Indian council. But sometime after 1827, when the fort was decommissioned, the Missouri River shifted course and is now about 3 miles east of the original bluff. Moreover, the face of the land is much different now than nearly 200 years ago, with scrub trees and brush covering the face of the bluffs, and it is impossible to tell exactly where the council was held. Still, one can walk the grounds secure in the knowledge it was near here the first momentous encounter took place.

Besides its Historical connection to the Lewis and Clark expedition, the site offers visitors other amazing
historical presentations including living history portrayals!
