Canyon Ferry Lake Recreation Area Website Description: Montana's most popular recreation area due to its close proximity to Helena, Great Falls and Butte. The park offers 76 miles of shoreline for a variety of recreational opportunities. Popular activities include: boating, year-round fishing for trout and salmon, sightseeing, picnicking, hunting, water-skiing, camping, nature studies, and hiking to name a few. The Lake was named in 1865 after a ferry that transported miners and prospectors across the Missouri River Canyon. Directions and/or Additional Information: There are several entrance points along highway 12/287. Head East from Helena and several signs denote entrance ways. The east access to the reservior can be reached from Highway 12, just north of Townsend.
