Buy Patrick Clark posters online. Description: In the early fall of 1864 prospectors found gold in the bed of a stream. Pete McMahon, one of the prospectors gave the name Silver Bow Creek because of the stream’s winding course and shimmering surface. After the discovery was made, one of them men went back for supplies. Soon the creek was loaded with miners. These miners were mostly all experienced miners who had returned from the Comstock lode in Nevada. The town was being organized in early 1865. By February there were 40 - 50 houses. Later on the year, population went up to 1,000, and Silver Bow was appointed county seat of Deer Lodge County. The first court session was held in July. J. F. Beck took all the records in his wagon and moved the county seat to Deer Lodge. Silver Bow and Butte camps were only 7 miles apart, and were instant rivals. Whichever camp had higher gold production also had higher population. People would tear down their homes, and relocate to the booming town, and rebuild their home. Sometime after 1869, when Butte struck a silver mine the people of Silver Box again migrated to Butte. With this strike Silver Bow began its journey to becoming a ghost town. Today Silver Bow is noted by Highway signs. Near the Silver Bow Junction, now Nissler, is the site of the the first panning in Silver Bow Creek."
