Description: The Ashley Inn offers an attractive 19th century sea captain’s home with island charm.
As you arrive at the Ashley Inn, you’ll find fresh flowers in your room and, upon your pillow, luscious chocolates made locally at Chilmark Chocolates.
In 1860, upon retiring from the island whaling industry, Captain William H. Crowell built the house for his wife and eight children. For over one hundred years, visitors and natives alike have admired this large home with its unique clover leaf window and distinctive ruby red accent panes.
In the late 19th century Captain Crowell’s daughter Mary and her husband, Captain George W. Brown, assumed responsibility for the estate. Captain Brown was a famous sea captain who mastered the ships Syren and Pilgrim. For many years he sailed his ships around the world, bringing back exotic treasures from faraway places.
During the 20th century, the house remained in the captain’s family through his daughter Gertrude and his granddaughter, Olive Hillman. Then in the spring of 1983 this lovely, well maintained home was converted to a small, gracious inn. We now celebrate our 20th anniversary of welcoming guests to the Ashley Inn.
Begin your day in the English tea room or the garden terrace with our fresh baked scones, muffins, or coffee cakes. Then enjoy a wholesome gourmet breakfast, such as a Basil Parmesan Frittata, Blueberry Banana Pancakes, or Grand Marnier French Toast. We use fresh herbs from our own organic garden and other area farms, and serve fine coffee, teas, and juice.
The Ashley Inn offers modern comforts with old-world charm. Each of the 10 guest rooms has been individually decorated with period antiques. Some feature canopy beds, four-poster beds, fireplaces, and whirlpools tubs. Every room is equipped with a private bath, cable TV, telephone, and air conditioning in season.
We also offer a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom carriage house for those requiring added privacy and spacious living quarters. Carriage houses are on the inn property, allowing you to enjoy the full B&B experience. Each one features a modern kitchen, fireplaced living room, whirpool bath, and sun deck.
Rooms may overlook the rose garden terrace, the apple and willow trees that anchor our oversized hammocks, or the stately neighborhood of Edgartown.
