BigSkyMontana.us Description: The museum opened in June of 1988 at the location of the old Yellowstone Lumber Company (then the Midland Lumber Company). The property was purchased by Horace and Charlotte Broaddus as a gift to be made in memory of the Broaddus, Wilbur, and Fudge families. Operated by volunteers and supported only by donations from the public, the museum contains many valuable historic collections including historic photos and books, Indian artifacts, old guns and ammunition, buggies, old autos, and many other items of interest. The mission of the Historical Society is to preserve, assemble, protect and memorialize any item or items of local historic interest. In the Museum's relatively few years of operation, the half block complex is rapidly filling with these objects.The 1992 acquisition of the famous Mac's Museum, previously housed in the local high school, is now located in a separate building. This building has been financed by the sale of a local-interest book consisting of a WPA financed interview project of pre-homestead era settlers. Mac's Museum contains over a thousand arrowheads, birds' eggs, butterflies, geologic specimens, as well as one of the finest collections of sea shells in the world-a real tribute to one person's efforts.Mac’s Museum is a one-man collection consisting of over a thousand arrowheads from every state in the union, Indian artifacts, birds’ eggs, butterflies, rocks and geologic specimens, Far Eastern memorabilia, and one of the most complete collections of sea shells from nearly every ocean and sea in the world."
