The Ecola State Park has a historical affiliation with the Lewis and Clark expedition. William Clark comments on its spectacular ocean overlook, the expedition's three saltmakers: Joseph Field, William Bratton, and George Gibson set up a saltworks station near the park. Visitors can rest on the beach or take the steep hike through the dense forest to Tillamook head. The area is rich with wildlife:elk, deer, several species of birds. The park is one of the most photographed locations in Oregon -- be sure to bring a camera. How about a picnic lunch, then a short drive to the Indian Beach parking lot? Nearby is a primitive campground for hikers traveling the Oregon coast trail. There is a $3 daily day-use fee or buy a 12-month permit for $25 Directions and/or Additional Information: The park is located off of US 101. Take the Cannon Beach exit and follow the signs to Ecola State Park. Drive carefully, as this is a winding road.
