The site, an inactive silver and zinc mine named the Orphan Girl, is situated on 21 acres of land and commands an excellent view of the Butte Valley overlooking the location of the 1864 gold strike. The purpose of the World Museum of Mining is to preserve the rich historical legacy of mining and related culture of Butte, Montana, and the surrounding region. The museum has an exceptional collection of placer, hardrock, and open-pit mining equipment. Hell Roarin’Gulch is a turn of the century mining community with thousands of antiques.There are thousands of articles common to the mines and miners' way of life found in the numerous exhibits both indoors and out.
