Meriwether wrote about his visit with these people in his journal - describing the wooden houses. Since that period, the erection of the Dalles Dam flooded the area with forming the 90 acre Horsethief Lake. Native American pictographs and petroglyphs are found throughout this National Historic Site/State Park including: Tsagaglalal (“She Who Watches”), 10,000 years old and perhaps the most famous native drawing in the Northwest. Guided tours of this Indian rock art run between April and October starting at 10am. Reservations are required: 509-767-1159. The park also offers camping, boating, hiking, and rock climbing activities. Boaters can expect to pay $3-4 for a launch permit from the two available boat ramps.
