Description: Located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River in Giant Springs Heritage State Park. The 25,000 square foot building includes 5,500 square feet of permanent exhibit hall, a 158-seat theater, an education room for hands-on activities, retail store, administrative area, and 1,600 square foot traveling exhibit hall
Exhibits detail the 1804-1806 journey of the Lewis and Clark Expedition with focus on their interactions with the Plains Indians. Cultural exhibits have been coordinated with the Crow, Blackfeet, Nez Perce, Salish and Pend'Oreille, Hidatsa, and Shoshone people. Feature exhibits is a two-story diorama of the portage around the great falls of the Missouri River, including five full size figures and a 30-foot canoe on a realistic land form. Two-story windows overlook the Missouri River. Theater production features a 30-minute introductory film by acclaimed film maker Ken Burns. Exterior opportunities include outdoor trail with native plants and an outdoor living history area along the banks of the Missouri River where demonstrations of expedition daily life and native cultures occur during the summer.
A series of speakers, programs and events associated with the Lewis and Clark Expedition have been scheduled in the coming months. Many of the events are free and are open to the public.
This project has been labeled a prototype for successful public-private partnerships. Financing for the project was an equal match of federal and non-federal funds. Support for the project was orchestrated by the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center Fund, Inc. a private, not-for-profit group of volunteers
