BigSkyMontana.us BigSkyMontana.us Description: Hell Gate once stood on the Frenchtown Road, which is three and a half miles west of the present city. The first building was erected in 1860, and the camp was abandoned by 1864. Hell Gate claimed the first marriage of whites, and the first jury trial in Montana. Canadian trappers named the river that flowed out of a narrow canyon east of the townsite, the Hell Gate. The large round valley at the mouth of the canyon they called Hell’s Gate Ronde. Cyrus Skinner and others of Plummer’s Gang made Hell Gate their headquarters during the winter of 1863-1864. These men terrorized the town and the townspeople. Local citizens worried about their safety, until a group of vigilante’s rode into town from Alder Gulch and hanged them. In 1864 a saw mill was built 4 miles east of the town, and became what is now Missoula.All that is left of Hell Gate is a chicken house, which was part of the original log store. "
