(February 15, 2003) – The Gorge Games announced today operations for the 2003 running of the world’s largest adventure sports and lifestyle festival has been suspended. The seventh Gorge Games were to have been held in the Columbia River Gorge, July 12 –20, 2003. “We are obviously very disappointed that the 2003 Gorge Games has been cancelled,” said John Arrix, Senior Vice President of Octagon’s Events Division, operators of the Gorge Games. “In its seven year history the Gorge Games has been at the forefront and set the standard for outdoor, adventure sports properties. Unfortunately, the event has fallen victim to realities facing the sports and event industries in these challenging economic times.” In 2002, the Gorge Games featured competitions in nine disciplines: Adventure Racing, Climbing, Kayaking, 24-Hour Mountain Bike Racing, Kiteboarding, Outrigger Canoeing, Windsurfing and Trail Running bringing together more than 1,500 athletes from 30 states and 13 countries. The Gorge Games also drew more than 40,000 spectators to both witness the competitions and experience an interactive spectator festival featuring educational clinics and exhibitions. For the last several years the Gorge Games were broadcast nationally on NBC and OLN. Efforts will continue in the coming year in hope of organizing the event for 2004 as the spirit of the games is still very much alive as witnessed by the enthusiastic and committed competitors and spectators.
