Ravalli County Museum / Bitter Root Valley Historical Society Website rcmuseum@cybernet1.com Description: The Ravalli County Museum is housed in the former Ravalli County Courthouse, built in 1900. The newly installed exhibit is the DISCOVERY ROOM: Discover what Lewis and Clark Discovered as they passed through the Bitter Root Valley. A 36' mural of the Corps of Discovery traveling both West and East, depicts their lunch sites and campsites. The flora and fauna, plants and shrubs that were noted in the Bitter Root portion of the journals are displayed. The interaction of the Salish, Flathead Indians, and clothing, tools are also exhibited. Medicines that Lewis brought with him, as well as 30 indigenous Native Plants are interpreted as well. Other exhibits follow in a chronological pattern and include a Miner/Trapper Room, the History of Agriculture and Timber in the Valley, and a photographic studio featuring Bertie Lord and Ernst Peterson. Upstairs, there is a scientific exhibit tracing the cause and cure of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, an extensive Veteran's Room, a Natural History exhibit, period rooms, and rotating exhibits in the former courtroom. The Miles Romney Memorial Archives contains all of the old newspapers published in the valley, which have been catalogued; an extensive vertical file of clippings and articles, historic photographs, and a research library which includes the Journals of Lewis and Clark by Gary Moulton are available for reference. The Historical Society sponsors a weekly chatagua style program called the Sunday Series of cultural or historical significance beginning at 2 pm. There are over 20 programs of the Lewis and Clark theme, more than 40 Native American programs, and much more that have been recorded and available on video, and soon on DVD or CD's. Directions and/or Additional Information: Located 50 miles South of Missoula, MT, on Highway 93, the Museum is two blocks west of 1st Street, (which is actually Highway 93.)
