Description: Late in the 1940’s, John Quigley, descendant of Montana pioneers, began creating a log and rock village on some 20 ‘impossible acres’ high atop the eastern slope of the continental Divide, some 15 miles west of town. A vintage winch-equipped truck was the most sophisticed piece of equipment that Quigley used as he began work. Trees in the area were felled and peeled, great boulders were moved and set in eduring balance as 4 block houses, massive gates, and one log or rock building after another arose on the mountainside. Year after year, John enlarged his village, furnishing the public buildings with log furniture, crafted with wooden pegs and sometimes upholstered by hides, hair side out. In 1957, he finished his last building, a beautiful chapel complete with choir loft and organ. through the years, and until his last few days of life late in 1979, John continued to add new features, enhancements, carving, creating. His handiwork is here for all to enjoy, with his life continuing the tradition of western hospitality.A restaurant and bar are open on the weekends.
